Think of your primary care physician (PCP) as your “home for health.” A PCP works as your partner, attending to your general healthcare needs and coordinating care with specialists and other health services.
PCPs promote disease prevention and health maintenance and provide patient education and the diagnosis and treatment of both uncomplicated acute illness, as well as long-term chronic illness. When medically necessary, your PCP will collaborate with other healthcare professionals and arrange for consultations and referrals as needed. He or she is the expert guide to your good health.
Primary care physicians include internal medicine, family practice, general practice or pediatric physicians. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants may also render primary care to patients.
