Psychiatry

This specialty is the study, prevention of treatment of mental disorders. A psychiatrist can prescribe psychiatric medication, conduct physical examinations, order and interpret laboratory tests, as well as order brain-imaging studies. Common psychiatric conditions include anxiety, depression, developmental disabilities, substance abuse and other mental and emotional disorders.

A psychiatrist requires at least eight years of education and training to become board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. This education includes four years of medical school and a four-year psychiatry residency.
